Matthew McGowan works on all aspects of bankruptcy, receivership, other insolvency, and corporate and commercial transactional matters for a wide variety of clients in many industries.

Matt also advises and represents numerous banks, credit unions, and other institutional lenders in these matters, in lender compliance work, including state and federal suits and compliance defense cases, and in foreclosure, repossession and related matters in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and other states.  He has served as counsel to numerous lenders in bankruptcy and other civil litigation and appeals, both regionally and nationally.

Before joining the firm, Matt was an attorney in the United States Trustee’s office in Boston, Massachusetts, representing that office primarily in chapter 11 cases in Boston and in Providence, Rhode Island.  He was a chapter 7 trustee for 14 years, and continues to serve as a trustee and state court appointed receiver in reorganizations and liquidations, and as an arbitrator, mediator, and master in insolvency and corporate and commercial matters.  As receiver, he recently operated and sold a local ABC television station, and his work in representing over 100 pensioners in the groundbreaking chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy case of the City of Central Falls gained national attention.

He has received the highest AV peer-rating by Martindale-Hubbell for 15 years and has been recognized in the “Super Lawyers” publication.  He has authored published articles, contributed to regional and national bankruptcy publications, and has spoken extensively at seminars and elsewhere about bankruptcy and insolvency matters.  He formerly taught bankruptcy law at Roger Williams University School of Law.  He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Catholic University of America School of Law.
